Once home to Joseph Priestly, the man who is renowned for his discovery of oxygen in 1774, the Joseph Priestly house was built and occupied by this British scientist and his son after this world-famous discovery was made. During the last years of his life, between 1798 and 1804, Priestly lived in this Georgian-styled house and continued his works in not only the scientific field, but also in education and religion. After a short introductory film in the visitor center, guests can take a guided tour through this large mansion and see some of the items owned by the family as well as implements used in Priestly's scientific research. Sitting on the bank of the north branch of the Susquehanna River, this lovely home overlooks the town that has formed around it over the intervening centuries.
